The Charterhouse comprises 35 flats, 15 of which are in the historic buildings and the rest in the modern blocks and the conversion adjoining the Master's house. All the flats have central heating and up-to-date facilities. There is a communal laundry room with modern machines, and a hall in which social activities take place. A guest flat can accommodate visitors for short periods.
Modern facilities
Two matrons and a porter live on the site, and residents are visited every morning. An emergency call system provides further support. Residents pay a weekly "maintenance" amount, equivalent to rent, and are beneficiaries rather than tenants. The interior decoration and maintenance of the flats is the responsibility of residents, but exterior work and maintenance are provided.
A Christian ethos
The Charterhouse is a Christian foundation, but is open to people of all faiths and none. Church of England services are held on Wednesdays and Sundays in the beautifully renovated Georgian chapel.
The Master of the Charterhouse is a Church of England minister, who has authority over the life of the complex. A board of trustees exercises oversight.
